DAWN: THE RETURN OF THE
GODDESS #1-4 Maybe this will read better as a collection, after tinkering, than it does as a four-parter. I had been expecting rather a lot more from this miniseries than Linser managed to deliver -- something even Linser, in his afterword to the fourth issue, admits to, even as he admits that he changed horses mid-stream with the story. What resulted here was an assemblage that began as a story about Dawn being called upon to avenge the slaughter of witches and finished up as an airy philosophical ramble involving Dawn, Lucifer, and the Atrocity, with little or no point to go with it. Along the way, Linser provides plenty of large and full-page images, as well as plenty of seriously ugly lettering, but even while Dawn remains an interesting character in many respects, this miniseries never gels enough to be compelling. ©2000 by Steven E.
