Disclaimer: The author is flying almost as blindly as everyone else, and has notoriously unusual taste at times. This is a subjective guide, not a set of commandments. My dear, just where did you find those tights? DC This month's Just Imagine Stan Lee is With Dave Gibbons Creating Green Lantern. Note that this series of books will be 50% off on initial release. Oh Goddess, the horror, the horror! Not content with Our Worlds At War, DC is now inflicting Joker: Last Laugh on us, with six weekly books in the miniseries, and crossovers into damn near everything else. If you want, you can get the six weekly books as a six-pack for 50% off. Stan and Joel may even throw in a laughing fish, who knows? I plan to pick up Superboy #93 and Supergirl #62, along with Green Arrow #8, and JLA: Incarnations #6. That sure trims my monthly selections down. I night take a look at Doom Patrol #1 in the meantime. As for JLA: Gatekeeper, I think I'll wait for the trade. Batman Archives Vol.1 is seriously repriced this month, and the first Supergirl Archives volume appears with a Frank Miller cover illustration. Also in the Supergirl corner is Supergirl: Wings, an Elsewheres project with art by Jamie Tolagson. There is also Generations II #3 from John Byrne for more Elsewheres fun. ABC/Vertigo/Wildstorm Say huzzah -- The Authority #27 finally gets on with the "New World Order" tale, with Art Adams handling art. Further issues of The Establishment, The Monarchy, and Cybernary 2.0 also arrive. Star Trek sort of crocked at WildStorm, but there's hope that Farscape will do much better. Marv Wolfman writes. Promethea #17 looks like lots of fun, as does Greyshirt: Indigo Sunset #1, which has words and art from co-creator Rick Veitch. Tomorrow Stories #12 is being resolicited, and still features the cover image of Greyshirt spanking Cobweb. Sam Kieth's Four Women looks like the sort of comic one shows to people who don't know comics, and with 50% there's no excuseto skip it. Same thinggoes for the Zero Girl trade paperback, also offered here at 50% off. Swamp Thing goes away with #20. Marvel Well, let's see ... I'll go with the next installments of US War Machine (4-8), Fury #2, Alias #2. Origin #2 hits the stands at the beginning of October, #3 lands at the end. If you don't mind having Thor: Godstorm #2 in there, you can get Origin #2, Fury #2 and Alias #2 as part of a NewComix.com #2's four-pack for 50% off. Another Marvel #1's four-pack at 50% off: Iceman #1, Marvel Knights Double-Shot #1, Mutant X #1, Bloodstone #1. None of them really grab my attention, mind you. Rogue #3 features a Julie Bell painting that somebody needs t turn into a poster now. Daredevil #26 brings in Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. Daredevil: Yellow #5 begins the wind-down to the end of the mini. Five compilation books under the title of The 100 Greatest Marvels will reprint 20 (#25 to #6) of the top 25 stories (from fan votes) of Marvel Comics. The compilations have various lengths. The top five will have separate special editions in Niovember. NewComix.com is giving all y'all 50% off on the five compilations together. I think I'm going to stick with Black Panther. There's a slew of trade paperbacks, both of recent material, and that of more distant memory. There's even a new Marvel Masterworks (the second year of Daredevil), though the price has definitely gone up on this series. Dark Horse Joss Whedon and his team of writers tackle a variety of things in Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Tales Of The Slayer, a new trade paperback. 50% off, here and now, a good deal. Also a good deal is Harlequin Valentine, a hardcover from Neil Gaiman and John Bolton. 50% off here, which makes it a steal. So go steal it, darn it. I'm intrigued by Scatterbrain, a hardcover collection aimed towards the younger set. Evan Dorkin is amongst the contributors. The usual Lone Wolf And Cub, now up to Vol. 15: Brothers Of The Grass. Image/Top Cow Ooooh, slugfest! Snorrrre. That HellSpawn and Miracleman business continues in #14, and now we're promised HellSpawn vs Miracleman. I can't wait ... to tell you to avoid this comic. Age Of Bronze #12 has an attack launched on Troy ... whoops, mistake! That's not Troy! Kabuki: Dreams will be available in hardcover, and NewComix has it for 50% off this month, which makes it an especially good deal. Powers #15, say no more. Rising Stars #18 starts the wind-down. Everybody Else AiT/PlanetLar is doing it again with CousCous Exprss by Brian Woods and Brian Weldele, in which the ingredients include romance, hummus, and the Turkish Scooter Mafia. Do I look like I'm kidding? Bries offers up an English version of Ulf K's Tango With Death, as well as Anike Feughtenberger and Katrin de Vries' W The Whore. Vastly different styles, but both look intriguing. More from ComicsOne, who have a line of manga trades that are terrific value -- second volumes of Joan, Offered, and Wounded Man, while Masahiro Sabato's Sarai begins. NewComix has a 50% off deal for this month's CrossGen comics, or you can sample Rude #1 by itself for 50% off. Drawn & Quarterly is offering up David Colier's Dennis Cote Was Good & Bad, as well as a revised softcover edition of I Never Liked You, which is based on Collier's life. 7 Guys Of Justice #11 continues to complicate matters, of course. Lord Talon is just about the only hope ... now we're really in trouble. Two trade paperbacks from G.T. Labs grab my interest this month -- Two-Fisted Science, which is being reprinted with a new cover by Gene Coan, and Fallout, a new book that delves into the creation of the atomic bomb, and what it cost scientists such as J. Robert Oppenheimer. Harris Comics is reprinting Vampirella #1 as it first appeared in 1969. Classic Frazetta cover, Tom Sutton artwork, and lotsof Forry Ackerman. Humanoids Press is serving up the next Metabarons trade, Blood And Steel, collecting issues 6-12. NBM's Dixie Road series looks interesting, chronicling a family in the deep south as it moves around during the depression. Volume 2 is availablenow, and Volume 1 is being offered again. The books are in 8" x 11" format. Arthur Dela Cruz's Kissing Chaos continues over at Oni, which #2 and #3 coming out three weeks apart. While it appears episodic to a degree, it seems likely to be a better read in compilation form. Maybe that's just me. Sirius has a new series from Aaron Bordner, Monster High, that looks like goofy fun. Phil Foglio's Girl Genius #5 should not be missed. I'm glad this has gone to full color. They're ba-a-a-aaack! Titan Books is reissuing the D.R. And Quinch collection from Alan Moore and Alan Davis. Mayhem, slime, and social chaos abound, and those are the good points. Magazines The Comics Journal continues to look at creators and control issues. 007 Magazine #40 has a double cover, and features articles on Never Say Never Again and Casino Royale, the two off-series Bond films. Books The Anime Encyclopedia by Jonathan Clements & Helen McCarthy looks like a solid introductory reference for anyone wanting to investigate anime. Then we have I, Who: The Unauthorized Guide To Dr. Who Novels by Lars Pearson. Obviously not precisely up to date, but what do you want? Covers the Virgin series, as well as a large chunk of the BBC Books series. Illustrated. Rzy Bradbury is back with a new full-length novel in From The Dust Returned. Expensive, but probably interesting: Digital Domain by Pierre Bizony. This is a history ofthe company, and the films they've worked on. Toys, Videos, Stuff I want a Collect Call Of Cthulhu t-shirt (Dork Storm Press, who also will sell you the Pokethulhu t-shirt and game.) Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace gets a DVD release from Fox, and NewComix is offering to sell you a copy for their dealer cost, which is spiffy. This comes out the day before my birthday (my birthday is on new comics day this year. Wow.) Not only that, but the same thing applies with The Simpsons, Vol 1 on DVD -- the dealer cost, not the birthday thing. A Night On the Galactic Railroad looks like a winner, but I like trains. Pioneer is releasing the complete Lain series in a box set. This is really worth checking out -- mind-bending stuff. Citizen Kane gets a special edition DVD, finally, as does the Godfather Trilogy. Ralph Bakshi's attempt at geting the first half of The Lord Of The Rings on film is coming to DVD, alongside the Rankin-Bass The Return Of The King and The Hobbit, neither of which are quite as cringe-worthy as they could have been, but are bad enough. For those interested, the Alex Ross Earth X busts continues with Spider-Girl, and a special variant with a vacuform overlay to represent the Earth X version of Venom. Harry Potter movie figures are making their way to market now -- both single figures and scenes. This is also happening for The Lord Of The Rings. Then there's the 12" figures from Monty Python And The Holy Grail. Now, like Brave, Brave, Sir Robin, I'm running away until next month...! ©2001 by Steven E. McDonald |
