TOP TEN #4 And the saga continues onwards, in a perfect comic-book version of Hill Street Blues/NYPD Blue - a mixture of soap opera, cop/superhero yarn, and comedy. In this issue, the ongoing grim business of tracking down a serial killer is offset by the arrival of Gograh, the monstrous reptilian father of Ernesto, a gang wannabe hauled in during the previous issue. The problem is that Gograh is several stories tall, and drunk (courtesy of a bunch of beer tankers he has stuffed into his belt.) Gograh is finally dealt with equitably (despite Smax wanting to duke it out), but not before Gograh's state has had rather gross consequences. Moore's story manages to seamlessly meld several different plot threads without losing track of any of them, even as he manages to work in character bits for several characters - an effort complemented by Gene Ha and Zander Cannon's art. This being a Moore effort, readers should also pay special attention to the background action, where more than a few surprises tend to pop up -- little nods and homages, and the odd truly peculiar visual pun. Overall, this is a series that I would love to see make the jump to film or television, and it's a comic I enjoy reading every month. ©2000 by Steven E. McDonald |
