X-Men: The Hidden Years
#9 Parts of Byrne's gap-filling saga still remain stuck in the Savage Land in this issue, thanks to the amnesia-struck Iceman. Meanwhile, Cyclops, Marvel Girl, and Beast are off in space with the Fantastic Four, concluding an old story in cahoots with the Fantastic Four. Part of this issue is devoted to presaging the arrival of the Phoenix, though it's uncertain whether Byrne is trying to slip in a retcon of Chris Claremont's work. Suffice it to say that the issue is long on Really Big Things, Marvel-sized technobabble, and galloping action, broken up by the odd character moment. As it goes, the issue is okay, but hardly great work. It's also still some of Byrne's best work in years. ©2000 by Steven E. McDonald |
